These days, it can often be quite difficult to eat a healthy for healthy lifestyle, well-balanced diet. After all, we’re always on the go. If it’s not work, it’s kids’ soccer games, running errands, driving people around so they can do their errands and a lot more. But no matter how busy we are, it is essential that we get the proper nutrition in our diets, and it doesn’t need to be all that difficult to do. Of course, it is important to eat three healthy meals each day, plus, we need to have snacks and fluids throughout the day as well.

What Health Organizations Recommend

Many health organizations, including the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association, recommend a diet that is comprised of the following: 50% carbohydrates, 15% fat and 35% protein. These are all important macronutrients that are vital for our survival and can all be found in delicious dietary sources.

Carbohydrates – With all that we hear about how bad carbohydrates are for us, you may be wondering why they are the largest part of this type of diet. We need carbohydrates, but we need to have certain carbohydrates. What we need to avoid are the simple carbohydrates, which come from sugar sources (and also help us to pack on the pounds) and eat foods that are known as complex carbohydrates. Some foods that are excellent choices include whole grains, brown rice, pasta of all kinds, potatoes and other root vegetables, corn and peas, just to name a few.

Fats – Again, you are probably thinking that fat is something that we need to avoid in order to be healthy and to lose weight. But we do need certain types of fats, for such things as the proper absorption of nutrients in the body and nerve transmission. There are good fats and there are bad fats. Good fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. The fats to avoid are saturated fats, which can raise blood and LDL cholesterol.

Proteins – Protein is important for every function of our bodies. It helps to build strong healthy muscles and even plays a role in our eyesight. Our hair, fingernails and toenails are made from protein and without enough of it in our diets, we will not be able to lead healthy active lives. Protein is also a natural form of energy and protein supplements are often used by weight lifters and other athletes. Some excellent dietary sources of protein include low-fat dairy products, nuts, legumes, soy, and fish.

When you have the right nutrients in your diet, it is much easier to get to and maintain a comfortable weight. You will be healthier and you will look and feel terrific.

  5. Yes indeed, it’s important to have the balance right, though I don’t think simple carbohydrates are bad as such – many fruit and veg contain simple carbohydrates.

The main point I think is that you need to burn the energy that you’re consuming.

I loved the advice that Michael Pollan gave:

Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.

By food, he meant fresh food, rather than processed junk. I think you can do very well by simply adhering to that.
